Its about a month before I must leave to do my duty to the world...yeah I'm gonna teach English to the unfortunate children in Lampang, Thailand. At first..I must say..I was only going to fill my "year off" before law school. Yet, I have now come to the realization (after reading The Post-American World by Zakaria) that English is the language of globolization..and most children, especially in rural areas of Asia like Thailand, would not have access to even an English speaking person if it weren't for programs like Service First @ Mercer University.
Soo..I have so much to do before I leave - which is about 3 days after graduation! yeah..I know. I have to get my shots, get 2 roots canals (grossssssssss), pack my immense suitcase with clothes that I probably cant wear because they're too provocative, and figure out how many skype credits I need to purchase. I'm sure there's more..butttt I can't think of anything else right now. Mind you..its almost finals time and I am taking 19 hours..which means I have 6 final exams. Pray for me...
To say the least, I am excited..nervous..a little sad about leaving my family, friends and mi novio..but also a little adventurous. I have not been out of the country since I was born in the UK and came back to the states at age 1..so my knowledge of the world is slim. However, I feel that people are people and no matter where I go, I know one word that will cross all cultural and language borders - A BIG FAT SMILE =)
So Im gonna gear up..strap up my chacos..and burst on the scene of Lampang with a smile and a passport.
Wish me luck...
